Jaxson Dart still in concussion protocol; Winston gets 2nd start

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. -- New York Giants quarterback Jaxson Dart remains in the concussion protocol and will not play in Sunday's game against the Detroit Lions, interim coach Mike Kafka told reporters Friday.

Jameis Winston will make his second straight start with Dart out, with Russell Wilson serving as the backup.

"[Dart's] just in the protocol. He's working through that phasing of it," Kafka said. "Based on the testing and the results, we're declaring him out for this week."

There was hope throughout the week that Dart could be ready for Sunday. He was a limited participant in all three practices, including Friday, and the Giants (2-9) say they liked what they saw from the quarterback.

"Jaxson looked like his normal self," Kafka said. "He looked great."

Sitting out provides Dart, who has been checked for a concussion four times in his past eight games, extra time to get back to full health. The Giants' next game is Dec. 1 against the New England Patriots on "Monday Night Football."

"My only concern was just making sure Jaxson's healthy and right," Kafka said. "And again, we have a lot of trust in the doctors. We have a lot of trust in that process, going through the concussion process. I know myself, I've had a couple concussions over the course of my career, and you just want to feel comfortable and good.

"So I think having that trust and understand that everyone's just looking out for your best interest is important, and we are certainly doing that with Jaxson and wherever he ends up getting to in this concussion protocol, which is again is very vague term that again, as a coach, I'm not a medical professional, so I'm not going to speak on the process. But I trust it."

Dart took some first-team reps earlier in the week, an indication he was preparing to play.

Winston said Friday that he "just found out" he would be starting. It didn't shake him.

"I believe I'm ready regardless, whatever this team needs me to do, I'm ready to do it," Winston said. "Regardless if he says, 'Hey, Jameis, you're going to be No. 2 [QB], you're going to be No. 3,' I'm ready. I'm preparing."

Dart left the Giants' game against the Chicago Bears on Nov. 9 after taking a hit to the head. He then missed last week's loss to the Green Bay Packers.

Significant attention has been paid to his and the Giants' approach with him running. Dart is averaging 3.4 designed rushes per game, behind only Philadelphia's Jalen Hurts and the Jets' Justin Fields. But that has been an asset for the team. Dart has rushed for 317 yards and seven touchdowns while averaging 5.6 yards per carry.

Winston was 19-of-29 for 201 passing yards with a rushing touchdown and an interception in the 27-20 loss to the Packers.
