Flemings dishes 8 assists as Hawks top Spurs in Las Vegas summer league opener

No. 8 pick Kingston Flemings had five points and a game-high eight assists as the Atlanta Hawks defeated the San Antonio Spurs 93-66 in their Las Vegas summer league opener Thursday at the Thomas & Mack Center.

The Hawks seized control from the start, building a 27-15 lead by the end of the first quarter, and never trailed, with seven players scoring in double figures. Second-year forward Asa Newell led all scorers with 15 points and grabbed five rebounds. Second-round draft pick Henri Veesaar (No. 52) scored 14 points off the bench and had six rebounds. Fellow rookie Zuby Ejiofor, the No. 23 pick, added 12 points. Kobe Johnson contributed 11 points and eight rebounds, while Keshon Gilbert, Isaac McKneely and RayJ Dennis each scored 10.

For the Spurs, first-round selection Tarris Reed Jr. (No. 26) scored a team-high 14 points and had 10 rebounds. Carter Bryant, RJ Davis and second-round pick Ja'Kobi Gillespie (No. 42) each scored 12 points. Gillespie also dished out six assists. Second-rounder Maliq Brown (No. 44) added two points and four rebounds.

The Hawks' defense stifled San Antonio throughout the contest, holding the Spurs to just 33.8% shooting overall and a dismal 11.8 % (4-for-34) from beyond the arc.

Up next: San Antonio faces the New York Knicks at 6 p.m. ET Saturday. Atlanta will then take on the Brooklyn Nets at 8 p.m. ET.
