Weber State is hiring Kaleb Canales as its next head coach, sources told ESPN.
Canales has experience at every level of the sport, with 15 years as an NBA assistant coach atop his résumé. He spent five years with the Portland Trail Blazers from 2008 to '13, including a stint as the interim head coach in 2012.
During his time with the Blazers, Canales overlapped with Damian Lillard, the Weber State legend who is now the general manager of the Wildcats' men's basketball program.
Canales also spent time on the staffs of the Dallas Mavericks, New York Knicks, Indiana Pacers and Orlando Magic, and has experience as an assistant coach for the Mexican national team, in the G League with the Texas Legends and in the CEBL with the Calgary Surge.
Canales was most recently associate head coach under Scott Cross at Troy, which advanced to the NCAA tournament this season.
At Weber State, he will replace Eric Duft, who transitioned into a new role as the president of basketball operations and development for the men's basketball program after four seasons as the Wildcats' head coach.
