Play By Play

Well, there we have it, Switzerland win the shoot-out 4-3 after a goalless draw after extra-time. It's more penalty heartache for Colombia, who were beaten by England on penalties in the last 16 back in 2018. It's a case of what might have been for the South Americans, who saw Lucumi hit the crossbar and Campaz fire wastefully over in the additional time - and they finished a superior xG of 1.03 to 0.35. To penalties it went, and Sanchez smashed the crossbar for Colombia, though Akanji leathering his effort over the top earned a reprieve. But Kobel saved Hernandez's effort, and Ruben Vargas netted the final spot-kick to put Switzerland into the last eight for the first time since 1954 when they were hosts. Next up is a quarter-final tie with Argentina in Kansas City on Saturday, it doesn't get much tougher! Thanks for sticking with us for this one folks, until next time!

RUBEN VARGAS SCORES! SWITZERLAND BEAT COLOMBIA 4-3 ON PENALTIES! It's a lovely effort tucked into the bottom-left corner past Camilo Vargas!

120'ColombiaPenalty - Scored

DIAZ SCORES! It was a long stutter, but boy Diaz places that beautifully into the bottom-left corner, with Kobel guessing the wrong way. It's locked at 3-3, but Switzerland have the chance to win it.

120'SwitzerlandPenalty - Scored

DOWN THE MIDDLE! Itten keeps his cool, placing his effort straight down the centre. Switzerland lead 3-2, and they're on the brink now!

120'ColombiaPenalty - Saved

SAVED! COLOMBIA CAN'T TAKE ADVANTAGE! Hernandez goes for power to his left, but Kobel springs to his right to parry the ball away! It's 2-2 but Switzerland have the advantage!

120'SwitzerlandPenalty - Missed

OH NO! A horror from Akanji! The Inter defender stutters on his run up, waits for Camilo Vargas to commit, but then blasts his penalty over the crossbar! We're still at 2-2!

120'ColombiaPenalty - Scored

JUST ABOUT! It's not a very good effort from Campaz, but his low drive just squirms under Kobel. The shoot-out is now at 2-2.

120'SwitzerlandPenalty - Scored

Oh, how good is that? All the pressure on his shoulders, but Amdouni waited for Camilo Vargas to show his hand and then coolly slotted into the bottom-right corner. Switzerland lead 2-1.

120'ColombiaPenalty - Missed

OFF THE CROSSBAR! COLOMBIA BLINK FIRST! Sanchez steps up, and absolutely smashes his effort off the crossbar. The referee had a check of the watch, but it's no good. It's 1-1 in the shoot-out, but Switzerland have the chance go ahead now.

120'SwitzerlandPenalty - Scored

JUST! Xhaka goes for power too, but it's not the best placement. Vargas gets a hand to it when diving to his right, but he can't keep it out. It's 1-1 now in the shoot-out.

120'ColombiaPenalty - Scored

Quintero is first up for Colombia, and it's an emphatic penalty hit hard to the left of Kobel. Colombia lead Switzerland 1-0 in the shoot-out.

120'+1'

END OF EXTRA-TIME: SWITZERLAND 0-0 COLOMBIA

120'

There will be just one additional minute to play, this one looks destined for penalties...

119'ColombiaSubstitution

Lucumi can't continue, so on comes the veteran Mina.

118'

A Quintero free-kick is flicked on, but is headed well wide. Rios clips it back into the area, but Switzerland cope with the danger. Lucumi now needs some treatment for Colombia.

116'

OH DEAR! CAMPAZ FLUFFS HIS LINES! That was the moment, Akanji and Xhaka don't deal with a long ball, and Munoz steals in to clip the ball into the path of Campaz. He's one-on-one with Kobel, has time and space, but absolutely blasts it over the top. That was such a huge opportunity for Colombia!

114'

Xhaka now hits a first-time effort from the very edge of the box, but he spoons it over the top. He was trying to get a bit of dip on it into the far side, but he gets the connection all wrong.

112'

Quintero shifts inside Ruben Vargas, and bends one towards the top-left corner. But it's wide of the far post.

110'

The pace has quietened back down a little bit, both teams are maybe a little reticent to take a risk that could prove costly.

108'

Mojica tries to spray one wide to Diaz, but succeeds only in booting the ball out of play.

106'

Switzerland get us back underway then, it's now or never to settle this before penalties...

So, there we have it. The final whistle goes at the end of extra-time, and it's still goalless between Switzerland and Colombia. Campaz had a glorious chance to win it for the South Americans, but shot wildly over the top. Lucumi also crashed the crossbar in the first period of extra-time, but there was to be no breakthrough. So, it's down to a shoot-out, who can keep their nerve and make themselves a hero?

105'+2'

HALF-TIME IN EXTRA TIME: SWITZERLAND 0-0 COLOMBIA

105'+1'

There was one minute of additional time displayed, just as Rios showed good feet before playing to Diaz on the left of the area. It was a little behind him, though, and his effort is blocked behind for a corner, which comes to nothing.
