Paraguay v France
Play By Play
France secure their spot in the quarter-finals with a hard-earned 1-0 victory over Paraguay in Philadelphia. It was a heated contest at times, which wasn't helped by an incredibly poor performance from referee Tantashev, who failed to stamp down on some incredibly dirty tactics by the Paraguay players. France ultimately won't care, though, after coming out on top through another Mbappe penalty following Gomez's late challenge on Doue. The French captain then duly held his nerve to coolly slot the ball beyond Gill on 70 minutes, netting his 19th World Cup goal in as many appearances and his seventh of this tournament. Mbappe also nearly bagged a second deep into stoppage time when he was denied by two stunning Gill saves, taking the French's xG total to 1.36 across the 90 minutes. Paraguay, meanwhile, put up just 0.15 and recorded just one shot on target as they bow out of the tournament at the last-16 stage. France now look to a meeting with Morocco in Boston on Thursday after winning five consecutive matches at a single edition of the world Cup for the first time. That's all for this one, thanks for joining us!
FULL-TIME: PARAGUAY 0-1 FRANCE
Mbappe does brilliantly to win France another free-kick down the left after yet another late Caceres challenge. How that man hasn't been shown a card today beggars belief...

Now Olise is shown a yellow card for shoving Galarza to the ground. The latter certainly made the most of it, which is ironic considering the way he's carried himself at times in this match.
OH MY WORD!!! HOW HAS MBAPPE NOT SCORED?! France should have the game wrapped up as Olise finds Doue with a wonderful through ball. The latter then finds Mbappe, who fires a left-footed effort at goal from the edge of the box. Gill responds with a brilliant save, but the ball then falls back to Mbappe, who somehow fails to finish and Gill saves again. Incredible from the Paraguay goalkeeper, but that really should've been 2-0.
Paraguay deserve some credit for their defending across large portions, but some of their grubby tactics off the ball have been disgraceful. Once again Galarza is involved again as he strikes out at Kounde out of possession, and yet referee Tantashev fails to spot it.
Cherki wins France a corner down the right as Les Bleus continue to run down the clock. They weren't exactly in a hurry to take the set-piece, but Olise finally takes it short to Doue and France look to slow the game down once again.
Once again, Tantashev somehow fails to brandish a yellow card in the direction of Galarza, who goes in incredibly late on Olise. It's been a really poor showing from the referee today.
There will be 10 minutes of stoppage time. Wow, that will certainly be encouraging for Paraguay. Can they find a late equaliser?
Now it's Paraguay who get forward as Galarza heads the ball into the path of Mauricio, who looks to find the bottom corner with a right-footed effort. It's straight at Maignan, though, who saves comfortably.
GILL SAVES AGAIN!! The Paraguay goalkeeper keeps his side in the game as he palms Mbappe's right-footed effort away from goal. It was a lovely initial pass from Doue into the feet of Mbappe, who was allowed to turn before firing a shot at goal. A second there would've definitely sealed the win for Les Bleus.
Paraguay see their first glimpse of goal in a while as Mauricio hooks the ball to Alonso on the left. The latter then tries his luck with a left-footed volley, but drags the ball several yards wide and France survive. Paraguay's search for a first shot on target continues...
France are playing this perfectly now. They're moving the ball patiently and forcing Paraguay to chase after them as full-time draws closer. The South American side are going to have to start taking some risks soon if they want to find a way back, which might play right into the hands of the French...

France make another change as Cherki replaces Dembele.
Paraguay still haven't had a shot on target in this game with just under seven minutes of normal time remaining. They can't get the ball off France at the moment.

France's Kone is shown a yellow card for an incredibly late challenge on Caceres. It's absolutely the right decision, but the French players are understandably asking why Paraguay haven't been punished in the same manner for some of the tackles they've put in.
It has now been 30 minutes since Paraguay last attempted a shot in this game. They did well to keep France at bay for so long, but they now need to find some form of attacking outlet of their own if they're to stand any chance of reaching the quarter-finals.
The standard of officiating has rightly drawn praise at this tournament, but Tantashev has been incredibly poor today. Too many times he's failed to stamp down on the dirty tactics of Paraguay.
More nasty play from Paraguay as Mbappe bundles Caceres to the ground on the right-hand side, perhaps in an act of revenge after being on the receiving end of some rough defending for much of today. Caceres then responds by kicking out at the Frenchman, but, unsurprisingly, referee Tantashev fails to notice and nothing comes of the incident.
The match has resumed once again with France just 14 minutes away from yet another World Cup quarter-final. It'll be interesting to see how Paraguay respond to going a goal down after soaking up pretty much everything the French had thrown at them up until Mbappe's penalty...
Mbappe's penalty also means he's now scored 11 knockout goals at the World Cup - three more than anyone else in World Cup history. He was born to play in this competition.
Play pauses once again for the second hydration break of the afternoon just minutes after Mbappe gives France a deserved lead from the penalty spot. The French aren't exactly pleased with how Tantashev has refereed this contest after repeated incidents of rough play by the Paraguayans, but at least they now have a breakthrough in what has been a frustrating game for them. The goal also means Mbappe has scored 19 goals at the World Cup since 2018 - four more than any other player.
France have avoided defeat in their last 30 matches when scoring first in the World Cup, since a 3-2 loss to Poland in July 1982. Paraguay have also failed to win any of their last five when conceding first in the competition, since a victory over Slovenia in June 2002...

Paraguay's Almiron also goes off for Avalos.

Paraguay respond with a couple of changes as Gomez makes way for Mauricio.
