Mexico become the second co-hosts to book their place in the round of 16, ending a 40-year wait for a victory in the knockout stages with a 2-0 win over Ecuador at Mexico City Stadium. After failing to hit the back of the net in the opening quarter-hour despite gilt-edged chances for both Mora and Jimenez, El Tri rode their luck, as Yeboah sent a close-range effort off the woodwork, before capitalising on their fortune to take the lead 22 minutes in, through Quinones’ powerful finish. Nine minutes later, with the hydration break in between, Jimenez made amends for his earlier miss with a well-taken strike after interchanging neatly with Quinones, which gave his side an unassailable lead at the break. Beccacece’s team resorted to hopeful crosses from deep that failed to produce many chances in the second half, with Rodriguez’s mishit effort in front of an oncoming Rangel the lone exception after the break. A heated final frame saw Hincapie sent off for covering his mouth to have words with Gimenez, but they were unable to use that frustration to spur anything positive on the pitch, as the CONMEBOL side fall to defeat with just 0.73 xG (1.02 for El Tri). The win puts Mexico through to the round of 16, where they will take on either England or DR Congo, while Ecuador’s first trip past the group stage in 20 years ends at the first hurdle. The blocked shot gives Mexico a chance to stretch the pitch and hit down at the other end through a counter-attack, but Gimenez fails to add enough power on his pass for the overlapping Pineda after holding up play, as the backtracking Moises Caicedo puts in a desperate ball-winning tackle.
Preciado’s long throw into Mexico’s penalty area looks to cause a bit of havoc, but Gallardo manages to rise highest and get his head to the ball, taking it away from the attacking Plata.
Moises Caicedo’s chipped pass into the 18-yard box is repelled swiftly by the head of Vasquez, who gives the Ecuador captain a chance to get back on the ball. 30 yards from goal in a central position, he opts to swing his boot at it and hit a first-time half-volley that manages to skid through the crowd, before missing the target entirely.
Mexico and Ecuador have met four times in the past five years between friendlies and the group stage of Copa America, with the last three ending in draws - a pair of 0-0s and a 1-1 - since a 3-2 win for the CONMEBOL side in 2021.
Hincapie works a corner short and quickly to Vite, whose immediate cross towards Plata is nodded away by Montes on the edge of the six-yard box. GALINDEZ TO THE RESCUE! Montes does a tremendous job to meet Alvarado’s outswinging corner eight yards from goal and generate enough power to redirect it goalwards, forcing Galindez into a one-handed reaction-stop on his line!
Preciado’s attempted clearance in midfield takes the ball of Gallardo and fortunately into the path of Jimenez, who immediately pokes a pass forward into Ecuador’s half for Quinones. After collecting possession, the winger looks to take on Pacho before sending his cross off the tightly marking centre-back and behind for a corner-kick.
Vite’s inswinging corner fails to find the head of a team-mate just outside the six-yard box, as three Mexico defenders throw themselves at the delivery to scramble it clear of Rangel’s penalty area.
