Play By Play

Switzerland beat Canada 2-1 in Vancouver to leapfrog their opponents into top spot in Group B. After a very low-key first half, which saw Embolo denied from a one-on-one early on in the best chance, Vargas fired Switzerland ahead just 39 seconds into the second period. Manzambi assisted that goal and scored the second himself, taking advantage of some poor defending and goalkeeping in doing so, before Promise David pulled one back almost instantly after being brought off the bench with a superb volley. Canada looked a lot better from that point and had chances to level up late on, but they were unable to take them. Marsch's side finished with an xG of 1.34, compared to 1.06 for their opponents, so they can argue a point would have been a fair outcome. As it is, Canada will now face the runners-up from Group A, whereas Switzerland will face a third-placed team in the last 32. Thanks for joining our live coverage!

90'+7'

FULL-TIME: SWITZERLAND 2-1 CANADA

90'+6'

CHANCE GOES BEGGING! Johnston gets his head to a left-sided cross and has space either side of Kobel to aim for, but instead it is right at the Switzerland goalkeeper.

90'+5'

It's a shame this Canada did not turn up until going 2-0 down – they have been a different team since then. Switzerland, to their defence, are dealing with everything thrown at them late on as Kobel claims another cross.

90'+4'

SAVE! Promise David flicks on Johnston's long throw, but Kobel is able to gather without breaking a sweat. That may have been the final chance.

90'+3'

Canada are continuing to knock at the door. A cross into the middle is cut out before a player in white can get on the end of it.

90'+2'

ANOTHER CHANCE FOR 2-2! Cornelius is again involved in the thick of it as Johnston's cross is crying out to be nodded in. He gets slight contact with his head but not enough to direct it goalwards.

90'

The game has become a bit scrappy as we enter six added-on minutes. Still plenty of time for Canada to score a dramatic leveller.

89'

Those Canadian subs 20 minutes ago have made such a big difference. It is the hosts asking the questions, albeit without mustering any real opportunities since pulling a goal back.

87'CanadaYellow Card

Millar is cautioned for pulling back on Ndoye's shirt.

86'

GROUP B UPDATE! Ermin Mahmic restores Bosnia's two-goal advantage in Seattle – they lead Qatar 3-1 now and could be going through in third place.

85'SwitzerlandSubstitution

Manzambi is replaced by Fassnacht. Switzerland appear to be changing formation.

85'SwitzerlandSubstitution

Yakin brings on Itten for Embolo in the first of a double change late on.

84'

No nation has scored more goals via substitutes at the 2026 World Cup than Canada (three, level with Germany and Switzerland).

83'CanadaSubstitution

Shaffelburg comes on for Laryea as Canada search for that late leveller, which really would feel like a winner in the context of things.

82'

As a reminder, a goal for Canada now would move them back into top spot and set up a home last-32 tie against a third-placed side. Switzerland are looking to protect what they have to prevent that from happening.

80'SwitzerlandSubstitution

Ndoye comes on for Vargas, whose goal put Switzerland ahead right at the start of the second half.

79'

NEARLY 2-2! Cornelius gets across his man but is unable to guide his header on target. He insists it should be a corner, but the officials disagree.

78'

Some hydration breaks just work in your advantage! That has very much been the case for Canada, who now have around 15 minutes to find a leveller.

76'

Saliba brought a long ball under control, just about, and then did not even let it hit the ground before finding Promise David in the centre to volley in. That is one of the goals of the tournament.

76'CanadaGoal

GOOOOAAALLL!! INSTANT IMPACT! Promise David, only just brought off the bench, volleys in a sublime goal after some unbelievable play from Saliba to bring the ball under control with his first touch and tee up his team-mate with his second. 2-1!

75'

We are back up and running following the hydration break and a few substitutions.

74'CanadaSubstitution

Promise David is given 20 minutes or so in place of Buchanan.

74'SwitzerlandSubstitution

Aebischer is on and Sow off as the changes keep coming.

74'SwitzerlandSubstitution

Widmer is on for Jaquez as the managers take advantage of this break in play.
