Minnesota Twins outfielder Byron Buxton, who has been on the injured list since Aug. 30, will undergo arthroscopic surgery on his right hip and miss the remainder of the season.
Buxton, a three-time All-Star, has been on the injured list three times this season because of hip issues.
"It's one of those where I just don't want to put the team in a bad position," Buxton told reporters, according to MLB.com. "Even though I'm fighting to come back, nobody knows if [a recurrence] would happen again and when it'll happen again. But they definitely told me it would happen again. So that's definitely where it was like, 'That doesn't sound fun.' To know it's going to happen, but you don't know when it's going to happen."
Buxton hit .254 with 25 home runs and 46 RBIs in 93 games this season. The 32-year-old is expected to recover in time for spring training.
The Twins are in third place in the American League Central, 6½ games behind the Chicago White Sox, with 15 games remaining. Minnesota is 5½ games back in the race for the final AL wild-card spot.
