Cubs slugger Pete Crow-Armstrong isn't slowing down in September, hitting his 40th home run of the season in Chicago's 10-3 loss Sunday to the Marlins in Miami.
Crow-Armstrong joined the Phillies' Kyle Schwarber (42) as the only players to reach the mark this season.
"It's a big, round number, and it's a symbolic number," manager Craig Counsell told reporters. "Forty home runs -- it's a hard number to get to, and not many guys ever get to it in their career, so it was cool to see, and [the] season's not over. He's got more to add to the number."
Crow-Armstrong's game-tying drive to lead off the fifth inning traveled 403 feet, as he joined Billy Williams as the only Cubs left-handed hitters to hit 40 or more homers in a season. Williams hit 42 in 1970.
The last Cubs player to hit 40 homers in a season overall was Derrek Lee in 2005, when he slugged 46.
Crow-Armstrong also became the first player in Cubs history with 40 homers and 30 steals in a season and just the fourth at age 24 or younger to do that in MLB history, joining Ronald Acuna Jr., Alex Rodriguez and Jose Canseco.
"I know how old I am," Crow-Armstrong told reporters. "I know how many years I've been up here, and I also know that there will be another one that does it younger than me."
Despite his home run, the Cubs couldn't complete the three-game sweep, as Javier Sanoja hit a two-run homer and Heriberto Hernandez added a solo shot to power Miami.
