Red Sox's Willson Contreras leaves game after HBP on hand

BOSTON -- The Red Sox said initial tests on Willson Contreras came back negative after he left Sunday's game against the Rays with a bruised right hand suffered when he was hit by a fastball from Tampa Bay's Nick Martinez.

Contreras shook his hand in pain and stopped halfway between the plate and first base after he was hit by the pitch in the opening inning. Interim manager Chad Tracy and an athletic trainer came out to check on him.

Contreras stayed in the game while the Red Sox finished their at-bats, but Andruw Monasterio came out to play first base at the top of the second.

Speaking after the game, a 4-1 Tampa Bay win, Tracy said Contreras was sore.

"That's all we know at this point," Tracy said. "Obviously we have an off day (Monday), and that helps a lot. And then we'll kind of reevaluate (Monday) and the next and see how he feels. And hopefully we're OK there."

Contreras is among the majors' leaders in getting hit by a pitch. It was his eighth time this season.
