The 2027 Monaco Grand Prix has been named as one of 10 sprint races on next year's 24-race calendar, which includes the return of rounds in Türkiye and Portugal.
The 2027 schedule is set to get underway with a sprint race in Bahrain on March 14 and run until the final race of the season in Abu Dhabi on Dec. 12, which will also feature Formula 1's sprint format.
The addition of a sprint race in Monaco is among the most unexpected additions to the calendar as the tight street circuit is notorious for its lack of overtaking.
Sprint weekends feature just one practice session on Friday followed by sprint qualifying the same day, a sprint race (one third of the length of a full grand prix) on Saturday before the standard qualifying and the grand prix take place on Saturday and Sunday as usual.
Sources have indicated to ESPN that Formula 1 believes the addition of a second qualifying session in Monaco will add value over two practice sessions, with the potential for two different grid orders in the sprint and main grand prix.
Qualifying has long been seen as the highlight of the Monaco Grand Prix weekend, partly due to the skill required to thread a car between the narrow barriers and partly because it very often defines the finishing order for Sunday's grand prix.
F1 CEO Stefano Domenicali has been keen to increase the number of sprint races in recent years due to the increased viewership the format receives by substituting two extra competitive sessions for two practice sessions.
"Data shows that total viewership of Sprint weekends is 12% higher than non-Sprint weekends, Sprint Qualifying is up to three times more popular with fans than Free Practice," F1 said in a press release. "82% of attendees at Sprint weekends say it adds value to their ticket, and 75% of F1 fans believe Sprint events add greater value to a season's calendar."
Sprint races have also been scheduled for the first round in Bahrain (March 14), the third round in Australia (April 4), the fourth round in Japan (April 11), the seventh round in Canada (May 23), the tenth round in Great Britain (July 4), the 14th round in Italy (Sept. 5), the 21st round in Brazil (Nov. 7), the 23rd round in Qatar (Dec. 5) and the 24th round in Abu Dhabi (Dec. 12).

Portugal (June 20) and Türkiye (Oct. 3) return to the calendar in 2027 while the Barcelona-Catalunya Grand Prix and Dutch Grand Prix fall of the schedule.
The Barcelona-Catalunya Grand Prix is set to return in 2028 as it enters a yearly rotation with the Belgian Grand Prix at Spa-Francorchamps, while there are no plans for the Dutch Grand Prix at Zandvoort to return.

President of the FIA Mohammed Ben Sulayem added: "The 2027 FIA Formula One World Championship calendar is a strong reflection of the global appeal and continued growth of our sport. With twenty-four Grands Prix across five continents, the return of Portugal and Türkiye, and the opportunity for an expanded Sprint programme, the calendar combines tradition, innovation, and fan engagement while maintaining the highest sporting standards."
The calendar, which also includes a preseason test in Bahrain from Feb. 24 to 27, has been announced despite ongoing conflict in the Middle East and uncertainty over where this year's season will end.
The final two rounds of the 2026 season are due to take place in Qatar on Nov. 29 and Abu Dhabi on Dec. 6, although Imola is being held as a back-up option if the two races cannot go ahead due to security threats linked to the war between the United States and Iran.
Earlier this year, races in Bahrain and Saudi Arabia, which are scheduled to hold the opening two rounds of the 2027 calendar, had to be cancelled due to the conflict. The Bahrain Grand Prix was then rescheduled to take place in Malaysia later this month.
