The NCAA’s Football Oversight Committee on Thursday voted to adopt a proposal that allows conferences the flexibility to choose a 5-7 team that has met certain academic standards to fill bowl game opportunities if there aren't enough deserving teams. It’s not final until the proposal is reviewed by the DI Cabinet at its June meeting. Only three bowl teams last year were 5-7.

SEC commissioner Greg Sankey said he realizes some coaches and ADs in his league have expressed support for a 24-team model. “The first amendment is alive and well,” he said. He also referred reporters back to his original December statement that “16 is the next right step.” I asked Sankey if he and Big Ten commish Tony Petitti can get to a consensus on format by the Dec. 1 deadline: “We’ll see.”

The CFP spring meetings have ended and as expected, no decision was made on future format. MAC commissioner Jon Steinbrecher said it was a “good, robust conversation” but there is “no consensus” on 16 or 24 teams. They are expected to talk about it again at a June meeting in Denver.
