The Patriots kicked off free agency with a bang, retaining safety Devin McCourty with a five-year, $47.5 million deal ($28.5 million guaranteed). The team nearly lost McCourty, however, as it took a last-minute bump from New England to prevent McCourty from signing elsewhere.
